Oven Repair

Wall ovens and range ovens that have stopped reaching, or stopped holding, the number on the dial — igniters, elements, thermostats, convection and the door latch that ends a self-clean locked shut.

An open oven cavity with the flat bake element looping across its floor, seen under a gas cooktop whose centre burner cap has been lifted off

How it gets described on the phone

  • Preheat takes far longer than it used to, and baking has gone uneven front to back
  • The oven lights only after several minutes of the igniter glowing
  • The convection fan turns but the cavity never gets to temperature
  • The door stayed locked after a self-clean cycle and will not release

What actually gets measured

  1. Cavity temperature logged with an independent probe against the setpoint, through a full preheat and a full cycle
  2. Igniter current draw measured while it glows — a weak igniter still lights up and still fails to open the gas valve
  3. Bake and broil elements checked for continuity and for the break that only opens once hot
  4. Thermostat sensor resistance read cold and read hot, so a drifted sensor is caught rather than compensated for
  5. Convection motor, its baffle and the door latch, including the self-clean lock that stays engaged after a cycle

The single most useful reading on an oven call is igniter current, because a glow-bar igniter fails visibly healthy: it still glows orange, it just no longer draws enough to pull the gas valve open, and the oven either lights very late or not at all. That measurement takes minutes and it settles the two most common oven diagnoses between them. Everything else is measured against a probe in the cavity rather than against the number on the display.

What it costs

Quoted as a band now, as one figure in your kitchen

Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.

  • Igniter or burner assembly $180 – $480
  • Oven thermostat or heating element $200 – $440
  • Refrigeration fan or defrost system $290 – $670
  • Dishwasher pump or control $200 – $410
  • Control board or touch panel $440 – $690
  • Compressor or sealed-system repair $1,420 – $2,950

Where a job lands inside its band comes down to the part your serial takes and how far the appliance has to come apart to reach it. The $89 you paid for the visit comes off that figure the moment you approve the work, and nothing is replaced on suspicion.

For scale — a comparable Viking replacement, before installation — runs $6,940 to $16,040. That is the number the bands above are worth reading against.

What people said afterwards

Rated 5 from 975 reviews

  • Broil worked but bake did not, in the top cavity only. He tested element and relay separately rather than replacing both, found the relay, and the bill reflected the one part.

    Beatriz H. · Portage Park

  • It threw a code and locked at the worst possible moment. He pulled the stored faults the next day, found a latch switch that was only failing intermittently, and replaced the assembly.

    Ottavio N. · Avondale

  • Convection had started howling on startup and quieting once it warmed. Bearings on the way out. He replaced the motor, cleaned the housing, and it has run silently through a lot of baking since.
